MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: CAESEREA, ISRAEL

CAESAREA, ISRAEL

Caesarea Maritima was most likely built on the remains of Statonospyrgos (likely Tower of Staton of Sidon).  In 90 BCE, it passed into Roman hands and, in 22 BCE, Herod the Great began to develop it as a deep water port and major trading center.  It’s located on the Israeli coastal plain, halfway between Haifa and Tel Aviv.  Herod also built himself a great seaside palace, complete with freshwater swimming pool….the remains of which are seen here.  The fresh water was carried via aqueducts from the mountains.  And we all thought infinity pools were the latest thing!
