MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: BALLOON REFLECTION

HOT AIR BALLOON REFLECTION

Continuing in “reflection” mode….  I had always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon and a few years ago was able to cross that off my “bucket list“.  Actually, I really want to, someday, parachute off a hot air balloon, but am not sure THAT will ever happen!  After several failed attempts (each involving a 3:30 a.m. wake-up) I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of rising into the sky, floating over vineyards and fields and touching down in a lovely little river.  Even though my only pair of shoes were soaked, it was worth it!  We soared and landed several times in the trip over the Napa Valley and Pleasant Valley in northern California.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: JUPITER, FLORIDA

TURTLE IN FLORIDA

As the lazy, hazy days of summer come to an end on this Labor Day, this snoozer doesn’t seem too concerned!  Taken at Busch Wildlife Center in Jupiter, Florida.  The Center is just a delight, especially for children, with lots of native wildlife including panthers, raccoons, eagles and, of course turtles.  Most of the birds, reptiles and animals were found wounded or orphaned and have been nursed back to health.  Admission is free and donations are gratefully accepted.  The gift shop is a wonderful source for souvenirs, stocking stuffers, and token gifts.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: HOT AIR BALLOON

HOT AIR BALLOON

I had always wanted to ascend in a hot air balloon and, a few years ago, had the opportunity.  (I was in the one casting the shadow on the right hand side of photo.)  After a day’s delay because of high winds, the journey proved well worth the 4 a.m. check-in!  This is the Pleasant Valley in northern California, just east of Napa Valley.

MONDAY’S MAGICAL MOMENT: MOYNALTY STEAM THRESHING, CO.MEATH

Ireland is a land of Festivals!  One of the most popular ones is the annual Moynalty Steam Threshing,  held on a Sunday in   August.  This year, the weather held for most of the day (it only drizzled a bit) and there were over 10,000 visitors.  As well as being able to see wheat being threshed by scythe-wielding men on horse drawn wagons there were wonderful demonstrations of gone-by Irish farming techniques.  This photo shows the “old fashioned” way of loading the grain into the steam powered threshing machine.  There is a lovely museum of antique farm machines and implements as well as outdoor kitchens set up to prepare traditional Irish foods such as boxty, soda bread, pancakes, etc as well as sausages, burgers and hot dogs.  The attractions ran the gamut from watching a pig roasting on a spit, listening to one of 4 or 5 musicians, taking a raffle on a bull calf (no, I didn’t win him!), looking at or buying everything from flowers and plants to home baked cakes and jams,  rides, horseshoeing demonstrations, and so on.

As you can probably tell, I love living in my adopted home village of Moynalty, County Meath Ireland!  There’s always something new to discover.
